What to Expect in a Discovery Call with Me

Discovery calls are a key step in my approach to creating a website that genuinely reflects your business. During this time, I’ll get to know your vision, identify any challenges, and explore how we can bring it all together to achieve your goals. Here’s how a discovery call with me will go:

1. Setting the Scene (5 Minutes)

We’ll start with a quick introduction, where I’ll share a bit about my background and my approach to design. This is also your chance to share what brought you to me and what’s driving your project. I’ll set the tone by explaining that this call is about listening to your needs and making sure our partnership is a great fit.

“Laura really cares about the customer, to truly identify the problems the business needs to solve.” - James Eyre, Product consultant & Founder of Connect3 Ltd

2. Diving into Your Business and Goals (10 Minutes)

I’m here to listen. I’ll ask a few open-ended questions to help me understand your business, your audience, and your specific goals for the project. These questions are designed to bring out the bigger picture and set the foundation for your site.

“Can you tell me more about your business and who your ideal audience is?”
“What’s the most important goal you’d like to accomplish with your website?”
“Are there any specific challenges or pain points with your current website, if you have one?”

This is your time to share, and my time to listen actively. I'll take notes so I can truly understand what makes your business unique.

"Before I worked with Laura we had a website that needed updating and a design not aligned with brand identity, resulting in a poor user experience." - Deborah Slater, Owner and Founder of
Ruby Loves Tuesday

3. Exploring the Project Scope (10 Minutes)

Next, we’ll discuss the project details so I can get a sense of what matters most to you in terms of design and functionality. Here, I’ll ask questions that help clarify what your website needs to do for you:

“Are there specific features you want, like e-commerce, a booking system, or a client portal?”
“Do you have any design ideas in mind or examples of websites you admire?”
“What actions would you like your visitors to take? For example, signing up for a newsletter or making a purchase?”

I’ll often recap what you’ve shared to make sure I’m on the same page, summarising in simple terms:
“So it sounds like you’d like a website that’s easy to navigate and encourages visitors to [specific action]. Does that capture it?”

"Laura is very easy to work with and is a great communicator, from the first introduction where we discussed our business needs to the ongoing marketing ideas, the development has been extremely well managed." Terrie Parson, Owner and Founder of Dorset Coin Company

4. Reviewing Any Existing Website (If Applicable) (5 Minutes)

If you already have a website, I’ll ask about what’s working and what isn’t. This is our chance to identify areas we can build on or change.

“What do you currently like about your site?”
“Are there specific areas where you feel it could perform better?”

This step helps me see where I can make the most impactful improvements.

5. Discussing Timeline and Budget (5 Minutes)

I want to ensure that we’re aligned on the timing and budget. My aim is to recommend solutions that fit your needs and your investment comfortably. I’ll ask a couple of straightforward questions, like:

“When would you ideally like to see this project completed?”
“Do you have a budget range in mind?”

If you’re curious about pricing, I’ll give you an overview: “I’ll base my pricing on the project scope and the customisation level. Once we’ve covered all the details, I’ll send a tailored proposal that matches your needs.”

6. Exploring Long-Term Support (5 Minutes)

Your website can evolve with your business, and many clients find it helpful to have support for updates, analytics, or other growth-focused additions. I’ll ask about your long-term vision for the website and explain how I can support ongoing needs:

“Once the website is live, would ongoing support for updates, analytics, or marketing integration be beneficial for you?”

If there’s interest, I’ll share flexible options for regular support packages to ensure your website continues to grow with you.

"Since working with Laura we have built multiple Google ad campaigns, with these being optimised and improved on to ensure we are receiving a healthy return on our advertising budget. Our products are now being seen by prospective customers when they search for relevant phrases and our company is being seen amongst the market leaders in our industry." Terrie Parson, Owner and Founder of Dorset Coin Company

7. Wrapping Up and Next Steps (5 Minutes)

To close, I’ll summarise our discussion and outline the next steps. I want to ensure that I’ve understood your goals accurately and that you’re clear on what to expect next.

“It sounds like your main goals are [summarise goals], and you’re looking for [specific solutions]. I’ll put together a proposal based on what we’ve discussed and send it over by [day/time]. Does that timing work for you?”

Finally, I’ll invite any last questions to make sure you feel completely confident about the next steps: “Do you have any other questions or specific concerns we haven’t covered?”

"She’s one of the lucky few who combines creativity, with a great handle on timings and organisation and she was someone I could always rely upon to deliver and impress. I would have no hesitation in recommending her." Katie Elfer, Marketing Director Cookery Doodle Doo

A discovery call with me is all about creating a relaxed, open conversation to make sure we’re on the same page and that I understand your vision fully. This approach not only helps set the groundwork for a successful project but also demonstrates my commitment to helping your business shine online. Let’s create a website that feels as dynamic and vibrant as your brand!
