Branding + Marketing Visuals
In the sports industry—whether it’s bouldering, rock climbing, gymnastics, weightlifting, or more—sweaty hands can significantly impact performance. Liquid chalk products work by evaporating sweat, leaving your hands dry with a light chalky coating for improved grip. However, many of these products have an unappealing chemical scent and a dull grey colour.
This new line aims to disrupt the market by offering visually appealing alternatives in fun, vibrant colours and delightful fragrances, all while maintaining high quality.
Fortunately, I had a personal connection to the bouldering and weightlifting community, allowing me to leverage firsthand knowledge and connections to gather informative feedback and prototype usage. My key insights from discussions with businesses selling liquid chalk products and users were invaluable in helping the client refine the product:
Ensuring the chalk colors were natural and not too intense, preventing stains on equipment or users’ hands while containing minimal allergens.
Making certain the scents were pleasant without being overpowering and also contained minimal allergens.
Utilizing packaging materials that are widely recyclable and/or reusable.
Keeping the product pricing competitive with existing market options.
There was a noticeable gap in the market, as most liquid chalk brands had uninspiring packaging, lacked effective promotion, and offered no unique qualities.
I recognised that the product design needed to highlight these distinctive features. Unfortunately, the kickstart campaign didn’t reach its target and didn’t go to market, but it was an engaging project that provided valuable insights into marketing and physical product design.
